Institute

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital Health and Prevention was established in Salzburg, Austria, in September 2019. Located at the University Institute for Sports Medicine at University Hospital Salzburg, an interdisciplinary and international research team works on a mission to achieve better sustainability of a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The following graphic gives an overview of our activities:

Cardiovascular disease causes significant personal, societal and economic burden. In the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, risk factor reduction through behavior modification is crucial. This includes adequate exercise, a healthy diet, consistent medication use and a smoking cessation. However, the evidence shows that it remains challenging for patients with cardiovascular disease, for patient groups with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and for the healthy general population alike to implement these heart-healthy recommendations sustainably and in the long-term.

The research team at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital Health and Prevention works to tackle this problem through innovative Digital Health Interventions for sustainable technology-assisted behavior change.

Open Innovation in Science constitutes a central approach to the Institute`s work. Open Innovation in Science describes the ‘opening up’ of the scientific process through various strategies, including citizen science, open access to scientific outputs and data, open innovation strategies from business and industry and patient and public involvement in research.
